"We need a valve."
That sentence is the beginning of a conversation, not enough information for a quote.
Valves, fittings, flanges, gaskets, bolts, and spares look simple to outsiders because they are physical objects. But in industrial settings, small specification mistakes can create big problems.
Wrong material. Wrong pressure class. Wrong end connection. Wrong gasket. Wrong standard. Wrong size. Wrong certificate.
Those are not small mistakes when equipment is under pressure.
Sell the specification, not the shape
A good valve enquiry may need:
- Valve type.
- Size or NPS/DN.
- Pressure class or rating.
- Material.
- End connection.
- Standard requirement.
- Media or service condition.
- Temperature and pressure.
- Quantity.
- Required certificates.
- Delivery location.
- Urgency.
You may not know every term yet. That is fine. Learn the checklist and ask for the datasheet where possible.
Why standards appear here
ASME B16.34, for example, covers areas such as pressure-temperature ratings, dimensions, tolerances, materials, nondestructive examination, testing, and marking for certain valve types. That does not mean a salesperson should start giving engineering advice. It means the salesperson should understand why buyers care about exact specification.
API language may also appear around oil and gas equipment, quality programs, and product specifications. Again, your job is not to bluff. Your job is to ask which requirement applies.
The buyer is protecting fit
The buyer is not asking for details to annoy you. They are protecting fit, safety, reliability, and auditability.
When you collect complete information, suppliers quote faster and more accurately. When you send incomplete requests, suppliers either guess, delay, or ignore you.
How the Cookbook helps
Chapter 11 turns spares into plain-English sales language. It teaches valve types, flanges, gaskets, bolting, materials, RFQ templates, and the mistakes beginners must avoid.
This lane can be a strong entry point because many buyers need spares repeatedly. But it rewards careful people.
